It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?//January 7, 2019

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme started by Sheila at Book Journeys and now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!
Jen, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee and Ricki, at UnleashingReaders decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus.

I have to go back to work this week after taking 2 weeks off and I know I’m going to be dragging. I have a super busy week with programs, school visits, participating in an interview panel and just catching up on work in general. I’m hoping to at least finish these 2 books this week.

Here’s what I’m currently reading:

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Am I one of the last people left who haven’t read this yet? I’ve had a copy of this book for years but never got to it. The teens in my Teen Advisory Board at the library requested to watch this movie in January so I finally had a reason to read the book. I will definitely finish it before our movie day!

Grasshopper Jungle is the book club selection for one of the clubs I run at a local high school. Honestly, I would never pick up this book on my own. But my favorite thing about book club is letting the teens choose the books we read, especially when it forces me to read things I wouldn’t otherwise. I’m not super into this book but I am looking forward to our meeting this week and I can’t wait to hear what they thought of the book.

  1. I’m currently reading Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman and I am blown away so far. I really liked book one and couldn’t even begin to guess where book two would go. It’s so good!

  2. I, too, have not read Crazy Rich Asians yet but I really enjoyed the movie! I’m currently reading Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren. I was lucky enough to have access to an early copy, and it’s been such a good read so far! I love a good slow burn 🙂

Hope your week back at work goes well and happy reading!

  3. Grasshopper Jungle was so wild! I would have loved to discuss that one with teens. I go back to work this week after 3 weeks off, and I feel so behind already!!! Will be glad to get the new routine more established.

  4. I didn’t even know that Crazy Rich Asians was a book. I’ve seen Grasshopper Jungle but never been tempted to pick it up. I hope the discussions about these are good. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  5. I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians but it looks like something I would enjoy. I have read Grasshopper Jungle and really didn’t like it, it seemed to be too immature for me. I hated the characters they weren’t relatable at all.

  6. I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians and probably wont. I adored Grasshopper Jungle! It’s pretty out there, but that’s the point I think. I wish that the secondary characters had been better developed. It’s my favourite Andrew Smith title. I wish I could be part of your conversations.

  7. I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians either, but everyone who has is really selling it!
Grasshopper Jungle has been on my TBR list since it came out, but I just haven’t ever gotten to it.

Happy reading this week, and happy new year!

  8. Do not worry – you are NOT late to the party, as I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians YET – this despite the fact that I live in Singapore, I own ALL the books in the series, and have watched the film adaptation! I have to get to it by next year, definitely!
Grasshopper Jungle is such a trip! I loved it when I read it. 🙂
